FA YOUTH CUP DEFEAT
Date: 27/09/07
Poppies' under 18 squad bowed out of the FA Youth Cup in a battling fashion on Tuesday 25th. Going into the game with an understrength side, they gave a good account of themselves in a six goal thriller at the Vic. Poppies' goals coming from Handyside on 32 and Elliott on 85. Had a chance on 2 minutes been converted when the visiting keeper spilled the ball and it dribbled agonisignly along the goal line, it might have been a different story. Still we scored the best goal of the game through Handyside, small consolation I know.

FA YOUTH CUP UPDATE- UNDER-18s PROGRESS!
Date: 13/09/07
MATCH REPORT; FA YOUTH CUP- Preliminary Round
Wednesday 12 September 2007
BASHLEY 1 POPPIES 2
A second visit to Bashley in 48 hours for the club saw our Under-18 side triumph in a close run game that was a good all round performance and sees us progress in the FA Youth Cup. Kicking towards the Clubhouse, Poppies had the ball in the net in the opening attack of the game, through Hatch, but it was ruled out as offside, however with our hosts on the back foot, a minute later a long throw from Keith was looped goal bound off the head of Billom-Smith leaving the keeper rooted to the ground to make it 1-0.
We had to change our game plan slightly on the quarter hour when Caples was forced off through injury, with Foster coming on as replacement he offered a further outlet upfront with his height. This was highlighted on 12 minutes when the Bashley defence was in disarray with Da Silva’s mazy run forcing a corner that resulted in Billom-Smith looking for a second- that was deflected over the bar by team mate Price near the goal line.
The ball was swept up to the other end and from a corner on 16 minutes Bash were back in it when Maher converted from close range with a free header.
We continued to take the game to Bashley and our hosts were forced into a succession of challenges that gave us free kicks, but we were unable to get back in front at this time.
Poppies dominated for most of the opening period and on the half hour a long range effort from Foster was parried away for a corner. Five minutes later a solo run from halfway by Handyside went unchallenged until it was too late, and his strike flashed in leaving the keeper with no chance.
Moments before the half time whistle, Billom-Smith had a further chance to extend our lead when his header was scrambled away in another goal line clearance.
Although the second period was goalless, Poppies could probably have done without the break and continued to hold sway for long periods of the game. However, it became clear that some of our players were beginning to flag, and Bashley began to put together some penetrating runs that saw Roberts called upon on a number of occasions. Not least when in the last minute of normal time an equaliser was denied by a fine point blank save.
We had two further chance to extend our lead the first on 56 minutes when again we had the ball in the net but again the assistant’s flag pulled it back, and on 63 a Handyside effort tested the keeper from distance.
Bashley’s best effort came on 83 when Roberts was forced into making a second attempt on a save- following a thundering drive from Snelgrove, then as play drew to the finish, made that all so important stop to deny extra time and we were through to the next round- a home tie against a Poole Town side, who had triumphed 3-2 on penalties the previous night against Dorchester Town that finished 1-01 after extra time.

RESERVES REVERSE IN COMBINATION CUP
Date: 13/09/07
MATCH REPORT; Wessex Combination Cup 1st Round
Monday 10 September 2007
BASHLEY RESERVES 4 POPPIES RESERVES 2
Poppies eventually succumbed to their Division 1 rivals in a well fought cup tie at Bashley Road. It looked all over at half time as our hosts had moved into a two goal lead; with goals from Tarr on 15 and Wilson on 32.
We did create our own chances though and our first corner on 5 minutes wasn’t cleared and Kot teed up a shot for skipper Muir who fired at goal but it went past the post.
Early warning signs should have been noted barely two minutes later when Joryeff was completely unmarked in front of goal only to scoop his effort well over the bar, and again when Tanner’s effort crashed off one of our defenders- and on 15 minutes Tarr was found free close in and the striker converted easily from a Wilson cross.
Roberts was making some fine runs at the defence and his best effort around 22 minutes was thwarted by a last ditch challenge from Burch.
Bashley extended their lead on 32 minutes when Wilson found himself free in the area and was able to slide the ball home following a Tanner through ball.
Vaughan made a fine save on 49 and was called on again on 53 to smother the ball. We then began to get back into the game and on the hour, some ball wizardry from Kot put Bashley on the back foot and shaking off a couple of challenges his run took him into the penalty area, where after drawing out the keeper, he unselfishly squared it for Roberts to slot home.
It was well and truly game on just six minutes later when a Labedzki miscue was gratefully headed home by King, causing scenes of jubilation on the away bench.
A cup upset was not to be though as McCarthy capitalised on some slack marking, after we conceded a sloppy foul, to get our hosts back in front; with Vaughan only able to palm the ball into the far corner and on 79 minutes it was all over when Bashley made a quick break from midfield and Tanner’s searching ball forward picked out Wilson who completed his brace by drawing out our keeper and sliding the ball home.
LINE-UPS
Bashley: Harper, Burch (Blackmore), Williams, Riley, Hastings, McCarthy, Joryeff (Brock), Tanner (Harris), Tarr, Wilson, Burden. Unused Subs: Webb, Yeo.
Poppies: Vaughan, Brown, Cole, Cox, McGrath, Barbour (Williams), Muir, Eaton, Roberts, Kot (King), Uddin (Labedzki). Unused Subs: Hatch, Rhodes.
SCORERS
Bashley: Tarr 15, Wilson 32, 79, McCarthy 71.

LEAGUE CUP
Date: 08/03/07
As they say, it's only half time, but the 1-0 win over the Magpies sets up the second leg very nicely. That game is scheduled for 20 March at the Cuthbury, come along and cheer on the lads.
At time of writing the only game outstanding is the trip to Fareham Town that was postponed on 24th February.
The League Cup Final has been pencilled in for Monday 7 May 2007, will we be there?

SHIRT SALE
Date: 08/03/07
The shirt was sold, but only for a small sum. Quite disappointing really, but it has put us in touch with a gentleman outside the area who played for the club back in the late 50's- and is still interested in how things are going.

FIXTURES UPDATED
Date: 04/02/07
Check the fixtures page, League Cup semi-final dates added and the missing games have now been pencilled in, at this moment in time we now have a home game on the last day of the season.

Tuesday 9 January saw the Poppies overcome Gosport Borough on their own Privett Park patch to set up a Quarter Final tie at Farnborough North End on 30 January.

ANOTHER BLANK SATURDAY
Date: 06/01/07
Following the last minute postponement of last week's game at Alton, today's game at Cowes is an early victim of the bad weather we are having, no new date known yet. We hope that the League Cup game at Gosport on Tuesday will be able to go ahead.

Maximum Points over Christmas
Date: 02/01/07
The fine wins over Gosport (1-0), Brading Town (3-0) and Wimborne Town (2-1) have lifted us up the table. This is tempered with the disappointment of the postponed Alton game at 3 pm on 30 December.

CHANGES TO FIXTURES
Date: 02/01/07
A couple of changes have been made to our February schedule, please check the "Fixtures & Results" section

Hampshire Intermediate Cup dream over for another season
Date: 03/12/06
The Reserves bowed out of the competition at the "first" hurdle going our 1-3 to Bournemouth League Division 2 rivals Old Oakmeadians. Rohel Uddin grabbed our consolation at the Vic.

Date: 29/11/06
Owing to the inclement weather, Farnborough Town’s FA Trophy Replay that was scheduled for last evening was postponed.
The consequence of this is that our Hampshire Senior Cup tie against them has been put back one week, to Tuesday 12 December.
Therefore we shall be unable to play Downton that evening.

New Player arrives
Date: 27/11/06
Steve Strong has been signed and should make his Poppies debut at VT on Saturday 2 December. He has played alongside Leigh Phillips at his previous clubs, so hopefully the pair can renew their striking partnership.

Although the match was postponed a number of programmes for the game have been retained for sale, and will be available at the Farnborough Town cup game.

LEAGUE CUP GAME
Date: 18/10/06
The 2nd Round tie, scheduled for 24 October, will now be against QK Southampton. Romsey Town being removed for fielding an illegible player. QK currently occupy the bottom rung in Division 2, but we must not take anything for granted and it is likely that league form will be thrown out of the window for the game!

SALISBURY CITY FRIENDLY
Date: 18/10/06
The Poppies made the short trip to Salisbury City on Tuesday 17 October to play a friendly. The game was organised at short notice to give our players a decent work out against a decent side. Although we lost 5-1 it was a very worthwile exercise given the lack of first team activity. More details to follow.

TOTTON GAME ABANDONED
Date: 07/09/06
Our visit to Testwood Park on Tuesday was abandoned on 42 minutes when there was a floodlight failure, the goal less game was evenly poised, so we will have to make a second vbisit later in the seaon. The later the better because of the midges that congregate at the ground in the summer- and they had a field day on the flesh of the spectators!

The visit to Stourpaine on Saturday 15 July has been postponed, so our first friendly will be at Chapel Gate versus Bournemouth Sports, kick off 7 pm, see you there?

ADDITIONAL FRIENDLY ADDED
Date: 06/06/06
Poppies visit Bournemouth Sports on Tuesday 18 July with a 7 pm kick off at Chapel Gate.

NEXT SEASON, WE'LL BE IN THE PREMIER DIVISION!!
Date: 24/05/06
Wessex Two will become Wessex One and Wessex Three will become Wessex Two.
But the 2005/06 champions, Winchester City, runners up, Thatcham Town and third placed Andover have all moved up to the newly named Southern League South & West Division, and Portland United have resigned.
No other clubs will be relegated from last season’s Wessex One, and it is rumoured that four other teams will be joining the top flight namely, Brading Town (3rd), Downton (4th), Horndean (6th) and Ringwood Town (9th); all meet grading requirements.

The inclusion of these four clubs will no doubt upset Locks Heath, who ended up as champions of Wessex Two, fully nine points ahead of second placed Hayling United.
Division 2 Champions Locks Heath may miss out as their ground apparently doesn't meet the grading requirements.
Laverstock & Ford, who finished second in Wessex Three last season and Verwood Town, who finished third, look certain to be going into the new Wessex One when the 2006/07 campaign gets under way and Ordnance Survey are set to become Stoneham (to reflect their new home presumably), and Warminster Town (Wiltshire League-formerly Western League a couple of years back) and Gillingham Town (Dorset Premier League) are also rumoured to be joining the new Wessex One.
Things to be decided for certain at the League AGM in June, but could this be the set up?
