Our Vase dreams were shattered in a very disappointing game played at Wilks Park home of Flackwell Heath. Marlow United are tenants there playing in the Hellenic League Division 1 East.
Although we had excellent preparations and the team put in a good deal of effort, it was just the final ball that let us down really, particularly in the final third. Poppies dominated the second half. Our "hosts" forced a number of corners early on but did not really threaten Jason in goal.
On 34 minutes a fine surging run by Rich created an opening but we couldn't quite put the finishing touch to the move. Some four minutes later Marlow United took the lead when a shot from Coull out on an angle around 12 yards out beat our keeper in to the top corner.
Despite Poppies having most of the second period, United almost extended their lead on 63 minutes when they somehow contrived to miss an open goal.
The introduction of young Jack Swann seemed to do the trick as not long after his determination driving towards goal brought a deserved equaliser on 70 minutes from close range. To be fair we should probably have gone on to win from here, and on 76 minutes Lamin had a great header disallowed for an infringement that was somewhat baffling; then somewhat unprofessionally whilst half the team were celebrating, United took a quick free kick and broke to the other end and scored when a shot cannoned off the post and was nudged home from a yard out.
So to use a rather well worn cliche, we can now concentrate on the League, but first we visit Warminster Town on 13 September in a League Cup tie.
