Star player: Scott Sanderson

Hamworthy United

A game that gave us a slightly flattering result at the end saw us jump to 3rd place in the league, was only wrapped up in the dying minutes of a hard fought derby, with two goals coming in as many minutes seeing off our local visitors from Hamworthy United.
Kicking towards the Winton End, the opening goal came on 16 minutes when Rich won a ball near halfway that on a decent pitch he would never have reached, and hit the ball over the defence for Tim to get a run, confidently skipping past a clumsy challenge and his pinpoint cross was converted by Scott’s diving header from around 6 yards, giving Jones in the Hammers’ goal no chance.
The good play in the opening half nearly came to no good when we failed to deal with an innocuous looking throw in and somehow our visitors failed to make the most of our hesitancy, and on the half hour Nathan Walker’s flick into the danger saw former Poppy Ryan Lucas fire his effort over the bar.
In the second half, Scott was almost able to repeat his first goal but his header this time flashed past the post. Scotty again had an excellent game in the middle of the park and a second goal would have been not unexpected. His performance though won the Man of the Match award although he was pushed hard this time by Ollie and Billy.
Gaz and Billy continued to torment the opposition on the left flank, forcing several corners. It wasn’t all one way though and our guests almost snatched a draw when on 86 minutes some slack marking enabled Dovell to have a free header that drew a sharp intake of breath from where I was watching. Perhaps this was the kick we needed because just two minutes later following more good work from Gaz and Billy, the latter’s fine cross in saw Jack net from very close range stretching to just toe the ball into the roof of the net.
This knocked the stuffing out of Hamworthy and the final goal came as we were entering added on time, the ball came out to Strongy; some ten yards in- just at the end of the stand he brought it down superbly well and after a quick look at the target sent a delightful curling shot looping over the outstretched keeper into the top far corner to seal a well deserved victory.
