Match Report

Gosport Borough

Sat 24 Mar 2007

Star player: Jason Harvell

Gosport probably deserved to win the match, which was heavily influenced by a firm and unpredictable pitch, and the fact that we ended the game with just nine men on the pitch, very disappointing and some of the free kicks conceded were stupid to give away- very frustrating all round.
We started brightly however but after the first fifteen minutes or so the game rapidly became scrappy and chances were few and far between.
With barely five minutes on the clock, we won a throw in close to the by-line and Tim’s cross saw Leo power a header down towards the goal that somehow the giant Gosport ‘keeper- Mark Brown, somehow dropped on showing a great reaction save.
In the 23rd minute, an inswinging corner from Tim curled goalwards and the keeper just tipped the effort over. We had to change our formation when Billy had to come off with an injury and on the half hour Ollie picked up a second yellow card, and effectively our chance to grab a result was over. The warning signs were there though, when on 55 minutes a Borough shot came in and hit the back post and bounced away harmlessly, but Gosport did not look too good and indeed when we went down to nine men when Coolie picked up a second yellow our hosts still didn’t get a goal until the 68th minute; Findlay capitalising on a missed pass out of midfield, and with just over a minute left on the clock, Rew found himself with a free header six yards out and made the game safe.
Gosport had to win this game to close the gap at the top- closing in on Totton still with games in hand, the Championship being essential if they want football at a higher level next season, and were a bit disappointing given the ill discipline that we showed.
